Teslapunk

Teslapunk used to be listed in Wikipedia as a cyberpunk derivative along with other subgenres as steampunk and dieselpunk. Teslapunk was later removed from Wikipedia. Maybe the removal was due to lack of references. Maybe it was removed because of Big Oil. Yeah, I am thinking the latter also. A few websites mention Teslapunk, often quoting from the removed entry on Wikipedia. The little that is left about Teslapunk in Wikipedia is on the Talk:Cyberpunk_derivatives page.

Teslapunk, named for the great scientist and inventor Nikola Tesla, refers to fictional narratives and/or visual styles inspired by 18th, 19th and early 20th century pioneers of electricity and electrical devices. Even the racist cheapskate Thomas Alva Edison can be included in that group of inspiration but I think Edison would be more about setting the low moral standards for the antagonists in Teslapunk.

Like other steampunk derivatives, Teslapunk narratives or styles commonly imagine an alternate history where widely available cheap (or free), clean and often highly portable power sources replaced all previous energy sources.

Unlike steampunk which mostly takes place in an alternate Victorian era Teslapunk would most likely take place during America's Progressive Era. If the Teslapunk story takes place closer to the present time then most likely free energy technologies are largely forgotten because the technology is kept secret by a government or organization that uses the free energy technologies to control the population.
