Copyright can sometimes be complicated because sometimes cases of copying are actually legally allowed. Sometimes using a limited amount of copyrighted material for commentary or analysis is allowed. It is usually best to restrict oneself to only the bare amount needed to make the point and no more than that.

For example, in this clip to demonstrate 2001 doesn't have a monopoly on bad things happening on television on September 11 I used the Sailor Moon "pilot crashing" on September 11, 1995 as an example. I think I used the right amount of that cartoon to make my point.
