Is Unity the Steemit of Game Engines Now?
This is kind of a followup to my previous post "Maybe an Even Better Time to Start Learning About Unreal Engine (Unity Upset and Blockchain Integration)". I want to change one of my sentences:
So probably now is a good time to start learning Unreal Engine AND an open source game engine like Godot.
So probably now is a good time to start learning an open source game engine like Godot.
Since the time of that post Unity has revised its fee structure. Anecdotally from what I've been seeing on YouTube it's too little too late and at least some developers are moving on to other game engines.
I think the smart money now is on open source game engines like Godot. Unreal Engine might be great but it is still proprietary and after seeing so many justifiably angry game developers on YouTube I wouldn't want to risk the possibility that Unreal Engine might someday also go in a weird business direction.
I will take a risk on Godot when I start to learn video game development. I've been looking into a few other open source game engines. What I want to specialize in is 3D gaming and Cocos3D looks interesting but Godot seems like a better choice. I am already learning python so GDScript should be easy to transition to. In my previous post @bflanagin replied that it is very possible to connect Godot to the Hive blockchain. That's one of the key things that I want because of my long term goals in learning programming.
I found a plugin that allows blockchain customization for Unreal Engine. Even if I knew how to use it now to connect Unreal Engine to Hive the license is almost $300 USD. With Godot I can save $300 and also not have to pay any royalties to Epic Games if my future projects are super successful.
One of the other reasons that I am optimistic about the future of Godot game engine is the developers that have said they are abandoning Unity for Godot. The way I think about it is like this: Hive is probably what Steemit would have looked like in 2023 if the whole selling Steemit event never happened. If you don't know about that @skyehi posted about that recently. It's not a perfect analogy but it seems to fit. A healthy portion of the Steemit community was upset and went off to fork into Hive. If you went to sleep on December 31, 2019 and just woke up today you probably wouldn't notice much change on Steemit because very little has changed. A lot has happened on Hive and one of the reasons I would argue is because some of the better talent left Steemit.
It is probably too early to speculate now but I think most of the better talent in the Unity communality is abandoning Unity. Not all of it is transitioning to Godot but I imagine that in a few years Godot will likely be a lot better off then Unity will be.
