Hede.io Entry: Nanotechnology

Nanotechnology is the precise manipulation of matter on an atomic and molecular scale. Because of quantum mechanical effects nanotechnology is generally defined as the ability to manipulate matter on the scale of 1 to 100 nanometers in at least one dimension. A single nanometer is one billionth of a meter (0.000000001 m).

Molecular nanotechnology is the manipulation of atoms and molecules for fabrication of macroscale (larger than nanoscale) products. Such products can be used for different purposes such as energy storage, data storage or medical treatment.

Because of the multiple potential applications (including industrial and military use) governments around the world have invested billions of dollars in nanotechnology research and development.
