A "mad scientist" is a scientist who is described as "mad" or "insane" due to unusual or unsettling personality traits or eccentricities. Mad scientists are often driven to prove their genius through ambitious, taboo or "playing God" experiments. Ethics and morality are second to the results for a mad scientist.

The most popular stereotype of a mad scientist is usually an aging male with unkempt hair dressed in a lab coat. Often times a mad scientist will break out into an evil or maniacal laugh.
