Doctor Who is a British science fiction/drama television program produced by the BBC. The pilot episode "An Unearthly Child" was aired one day after the Kennedy assassination. The original series ran from 1963-1989 and was revived in 2005.

The show follows the adventures of a time traveling humanoid alien known simply as "the Doctor". The Doctor is from the planet Gallifrey and is a member of the race known as Time Lords (a female Time Lord is referred to as a "Time Lady"). All Time Lords are Gallifreyan but not all Gallifreyans are Time Lords. Time Lords are distinguished by their ability to regenerate when close to death.

The Doctor is often accompanied by one or more companions the Doctor has invited to travel and see all of time and space. During most of the Doctor's adventures an alien foe must be defeated. Some of the most common Doctor Who villains are Sontarans, Cybermen, Daleks and a renegade Time Lord known as "the Master".
