Hunter's comment

Ethereum addresses were originally designed to be a long hexadecimal string such as 0x4dg.... which isn't very easy to remember.

The ethereum name service (ENS) is an open and distributed naming system for the ethereum blockchain.

A long ethereum address to send transactions to can have a much simpler .eth domain resolved to the address. Instead of 0x4csudh... an address such as steemhunt.eth can be used for accepting ether. Other long ethereum addresses can also be resolved with a .eth subdomain such as holovision.steemhunt.eth.

Note: Nobody has registered steemhunt.eth yet so those hypothetical examples above currently don't exist on the ethereum blockchain.
